Artsy Farts
I’ve been designing bits and pieces of things for a while now, really ever since I first made a clip-art heavy menu for Dani’s Coffee Cottage. (Nearly 10 years ago? Really?) I can’t help but love typefaces, negative space, graphic elements, perfectly engineered color.
Despite this nerdiness, I’ve never thought of myself as an “artist” until recently. While I loved art classes in college, (minus the ones with built-in naptime a slideshow) I didn’t throw myself into it with the clay-covered, paint-speckled abandon of my fellow Don Morris-building-dwellers. Instead I chose to spend my time on the newspaper, creating our own form of artistry – grammar and page design and strong opinions.
I wonder what would have been different if I’d gone for graphic design wholeheartedly, instead of just keeping it on the side. On days like today, I think it might be fun to draw pictures for a living.
