In Which I Discover that Michael’s is a Dangerous Place for Someone with such a Weak Will
I love arts and crafts. As a kid, I remember resolutely saving up my money and marching into Michael’s with 10 dollars in my hand and dreams of creative genius. The knobby-kneed kid with a dozen pen pals and affinity for rubber stamps? That was me.
I went to college and found ways to keep up the trend of spending time and money on weird things like tubes of paint and fake moss, by minoring in Art and taking awesome classes like 2-D and 3-D Design, in which we talked about negative space and emotion and contrast and all those great, hard-to-pin-down things that you never get to talk about in college, where it’s all names and dates and rules.
Since living in SoCal, I’ve kept up the crafty tradition by wandering through Farmer’s Markets and craft stores whenever the mood strikes, repainting 50-cent garage-sale furniture, and now… the ultimate in creative juicy heaven: GETTING MARRIED.
Want to rubber stamp something? We have place cards. Want to be ridiculously detailed? We have itty-bitty leaf cut-outs that will give you arthritis when you tie them on the favors. Everywhere you look is something expensive that you could make yourself for cheaper and better and more flavorful, and sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities and LOSE MY HEAD. Just a little.
There’s just… sunflowers! Photo frames! Stationary! Paint! Pretty boxes to keep random bits in! Pretty boxes to keep other stuff in! *Ahem* Anyways.
This is on my mind because I had a 25% off coupon for Michael’s. It was going to expire, and it was burning a hole in my pocket. So, I went in, determined to “just look”. I came out with three giant bags of Wedding Reception must-haves, and um… I kinda spent… um.. like.. maybe 100? Dollars? I mean, pesos? I mean… HI FIANCE! I haven’t told you about my craft store weakness yet! *nervous giggle*
But I have a receipt. And I can take it back. BUT IT’S SO PRETTY, I DON’T KNOW IF I CAN. (sigh)
(Side note: if you’ve ever wondered what my wedding style is, wonder no more. I’ve found my perfect inspiration.)
