Reverb10 – Wisdom
Prompt: Wisdom. What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out?
The thing about wise decisions is that you don’t often think, “wow, I’m so happy, aren’t I being wise” when you’re making them. Most often, you think “this is a drag” or “why’d so-and-so have to give me that good advice when I was so happy in my blissful ignorance”.
At least that’s what I think.
But I did make a couple of wise decisions this year, despite my kicking and screaming. One was to keep freelancing, despite feeling overwhelmed and under-appreciated and generally bad about it. I’ve written about my growth in that area this year, and no matter what the future holds for this little business, I’m glad I stuck it out.
Two was to go to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg. It seemed like an expensive and foolish trip at the time, but it turned into a really great thing. I really like politics and I love America. That said, I was tired of talking about it and getting no response, tired of pouring my soul into political blog posts that earned me only a handful of hits per day. But going to these historic places revived my little star-spangled heart and made me remember why I cared in the first place. Also, we were tired. Adam and I were overworked and starting to fray around the edges, so getting to traipse around a lovely old city for several days and relish time together (with no commitments of any kind!) was an awesome gift. I keep meaning to write more about that trip, but it was fan-flipping-tastic.
Thinking about wisdom makes me think about decisions. What will I think about these days in years to come? Will I be pleased with the choices I made or wish I’d thought a bit harder?
