Stay there, I’m coming to pick you up
Last night, I was doing usual thing, running one of 58,976 pre-wedding errands (no, it’s not overwhelming, why?) and then going home to straighten out my life and put on comfy pants. Adam was working late and I was designing adorable reception goodies on Clark (my Mac – yes, he has a name and a great deal of personality, thankyouverymuch,) when he called.
“OK, I’ll be over in a bit,” I told him, preparing to go to the Future Nichols’ Home for a few hours.
I was throwing my laundry in the dryer and getting ready to go, when I heard my phone ring. I figured I’d get it in a minute. It rang again. And again.
When I got back in the room, I called Adam back. “Sup?”
“Are you still at home?” he asked. “I don’t want you to drive home alone at night. Stay there, I’m coming to pick you up.”
I know. I’m one lucky girl. 🙂
I was leaning on the kitchen counter, telling Kim about this little instance, and as we were talking, I realized something that keeps swirling around my head. I don’t think about myself that way, but I’m so glad he does.
Isn’t that true of us, though? Women especially don’t consider ourselves worthy of care, protection and tenderness. It’s a treat when it happens; we nod graciously when a man unexpectedly does the chivalrous thing: opens a door, brings us a drink or lets us go first. But for the most part, we’re Big Girls, driving ourselves around at night and carrying our own heavy packages and taking out our own trash and fixing our own leaky pipes. (Or at least calling a plumber, let’s be honest.)
This way of thinking also trickles into my spiritual life, where I find myself telling God what I need. Really. As if.
“But, gee, God, I’m good at this. You may not have thought of this angle, so I should take care of it. Speaking of, this is so small, I’m sure you don’t even care. You’re GOD, after all.”
But He does care. We are worth His thoughts and His love, and He does know what’s best for us. We are worth being picked up and taken care of.
Stay there. Stop striving. He’s coming to pick you up.
